to name but one example was created to introduce and reinforce seven basic
values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing family,
community and culture amongst Africans living in the diaspora. These values
are called the Nguzo Saba which in Swahili means the Seven Principles. Developed
by Dr. Karenga, the Nguzo Saba stand at the heart of the origin and meaning
of Kwanzaa, for it is these values which are not only the building blocks
for community but also serve to reinforce and enhance them.
Nguzo
Saba (The Seven Principles)
Umoja (Unity) 26.12 To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community,
nation and race.
Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) 27.12 To define ourselves, name ourselves,
create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) 28.12 To build and maintain our community
together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems
and to solve them together.
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) 29.12 To build and maintain our own stores,
shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.
Nia (Purpose) 30.12 To make our collective vocation the building and developing of
our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
Kuumba (Creativity) 31.12 To do always as much as we can, in the way we can,
in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
Also date for Bring a Dish
Imani (Faith) 1.1 To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents,
our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
Kwanzaa,
a living cultural tradition aims to reflect the best of African thought and
practice in its reaffirmation of the dignity of the human person in community
and culture, the well-being of family and community, the integrity of the
environment and our kinship with it, and the rich resource and meaning of
a people's culture.
Facilitation
Centre
of Creativity Facilitation is Humorous, Engaging, Participant Centred and
Highly Musical. We will walk, talk, drum, sing and dance our stories a unique,
exuberant, colourful and dynamic journey from the depths of the jungle to
the deep of the sea. We encourage a sense of confidence and community, facilitating
all participants to jump in as we lead them on a journey through Rhythm, Movement
and Voice which taps into creativity, listening skills and self-expression.
A fantastic learning experience for children, young people and families alike!
We are
using community art and self-development to develop positive and empowering
statements, which underlie the concept of the Greenfair and Agenda 21: Think
Globally, Act Locally! We are working to raise awareness and respect for our
local environment and neighbourhood. We use art, music, fun and practical
solutions in order to get our messages across.
